Psychiatric treatment starts with an initial 60-minute appointment. We focus on why you are starting or continuing psychiatric care. Together, we identify and discuss your concerns, your strengths and goals.
During this visit you will be asked questions about your overall health, previous emotional challenges, your background and current life circumstances. We will also discuss your family and friendships and use of drugs or other substances. You may also be asked to complete symptom scales to provide an additional measure of your current status and how you are doing. Gathering all of this information helps to have a better understanding of who you are and the best treatment options available.
Once information is gathered, we will discuss a treatment plan which is guided by your preferences, needs and treatment goals. This will include the frequency of subsequent visits and treatment options such as psychotherapy and/or medications, if needed. You may also be referred for a group or other professional consultations or testing.
Before your first appointment
In order to be seen, you must complete all intake forms prior to your visit. These will be provided to you via a link to your patient portal that is given at the time of your appointment confirmation. We are unable see you if these are not completed. Also, provide a list of current and previous medications, including the doses, when and length of time you have used them. If you have a psychotherapist or counselor and would like for us to speak with them before your first visit, please have them contact us. For in-person visits, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your schedule appointment to review or go over any forms or paperwork needed.
Medication management or monitoring visits are 20-30 minutes long. These appointments are scheduled based on how frequently we need to review your medication treatment and its effectiveness and make decisions about any changes that may be needed. Once we establish that medication is working well, and your condition is stable, we will meet less often. Some check-ups may be via video telehealth if you choose. You must be in a private location with good connectivity where you will not be distracted. Checkup visits cannot be held over the phone.
Supportive psychotherapy visits are usually 25 to 50 minutes in length and may include medication monitoring. The frequency of therapy visits is variable, ranging from twice weekly to once a month.
