Frequently Asked Questions

FIRST APPOINTMENTS

Psychiatric treatment begins with a 60-minute initial visit focused on understanding your concerns, strengths, and goals. You'll be asked about your health, emotional history, relationships, and substance use. Symptom scales may be used to assess your current state. Based on this information, a personalized treatment plan is created—guided by your preferences—and may include therapy, medication, or referrals for additional support or testing.

I made an appointment- now what?

You will be contacted by our billing department to verify your insurance and/or to make payment arrangements.  Once your visit is confirmed,  you’ll receive portal access when your visit is confirmed.  All intake forms must be completed in your patient portal before your appointment.  Please also provide a list of current and past medications with dosages and which worked or didn't work. Please arrive or sign-in to your teleleath appointment 15 minutes early to ensure you are connected and to complete any remaining paperwork.

Genetic (Pharmacogenomic) Testing

Pharmacogenomic testing is a tool that helps personalize your psychiatric treatment by analyzing how your genes may affect your response to medications. It involves a simple DNA sample, like a cheek swab, and can guide decisions to improve effectiveness and reduce side effects. While it doesn’t diagnose conditions or guarantee results, it can offer helpful insights when selecting or reviewing medications. Pharmacogenetic testing is not currently standard practice in psychiatry but may be considered in specific cases—such as treatment-resistant depression, significant medication side effects, or when multiple medication trials have failed.

How can I get genetic testing?

You must have your provider prescribe this test.  If you are new to us, you must first have an initial evaluation.  We will discuss effectiveness or side effects of past medications used for your symptoms.  Testing isn't routine for everyone, and costs vary, so talk to your provider about whether it’s right for you and what insurance may cover.

I had an evaluation and have a plan, when do I make my next appointment?

Medication management visits are mutally decided at your appoinments.  They are 20–30 minutes long and help track how well your medication is working and make adjustments if needed. As stability improves, visits are less frequent and may be done by secure video (not by phone).

Supportive therapy sessions last 25–50 minutes and may include medication check-ins. The frequency of sessions varies based on your needs, from twice a week to monthly.

I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment, how?

Appointment times are made and held exclusively for those who schedule. Cancellations and requests to re-schedule will be subject to cancellation costs if NOT RECEIVED AT LEAST 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE and automatically billed to your credit card on file.   In order to avoid a charge for a late cancellation, please give our office notice of at least 48 business hours prior to your scheduled appointment.

We appreciate your cooperation out of respect for other clients who may need to schedule time for our services.
